Our 2015 elective course is titled “Revitalizing Our Hometowns" (#3311) Infill and redevelopment is heating up, but at what cost? How can North Carolina communities succeed and prosper in the 21st century global economy without losing their individual, treasured sense of identity and unique cultural resources? Urban infill redevelopment is a strategy that is used to repurpose real estate, but what is the cost to individuals, families, and neighborhoods alike for this highly enterprising real estate trend?
As high potential properties get redeveloped, neighborhood streets change dramatically, almost overnight. Values rise but so do the issues and emotions surrounding redevelopment. This course dives headlong into all the sticky issues, including the use of eminent domain and the public taking of private land for private gain as a development strategy.
